2026 Minn. Laws ch. 119 (signed 5/27/2026) rewrote Minn. Stat. 154.05: 1,500 hours (281 classroom and 1,219 practical), minimum age 17 in place of the old 10th-grade rule, and no extra 500 hours after a failed retake. The online statute page may still show the old text. Cosmetologists can be credited up to 1,000 of the 1,500 hours (154.11 subd. 4), so no fixed crossover hour figure is stated; there is no apprenticeship route to registration.
