P.A. 104-153 (effective Jan 1, 2026) kept 1,500 hours over at least 9 months and dropped the 3-year maximum. A cosmetology school graduate with 1,500 cosmetology hours needs 500 more barbering hours (225 ILCS 410/2-3), and a barber school may credit up to 1,000 cosmetology hours. The Act has no apprenticeship route, and before the amendment the exam was described as written (410/2-7).
